After hatching we were delivered to Dan’s Feedbin in Superior WI. Life was busy. We lived in a 250 gallon tub with about 100 other new hatchlings. It was OK, really crowded. We watched people come and go day by day and take some of our new friends away. We were picked up in April 2009 and brought to our new home. Oddly it was another bin. But we were held every day and got to run around on the hard wood floors for a little bit every day. We grew up in a spare bedroom safe from the dogs and cats, whom I am sure, would have loved to have a snack. As we got bigger our parents put perches in out bin so we could look outside the window and not be confined to the floor of the tub. Then in June our parents moved us out to Chick-O-Traz, a very secure facility in the back yard where nothing could get in or out. We found safety and solitude in our new home. We had a huge home and a very large run fully enclosed. They even put a tarp on top over the roof to keep us dry in the run. We spent our first summer running around, scratching in the dirt and watching the outside world. Katie the youngest of the three dogs would take a run at us and bounce off of the chicken wire. We enjoyed that and would toy with her. It was fun. The other two dogs really paid us no attention. In the fall our parents fully insulated our house and installed a huge window so we could look out at the snow in the upcoming winter months. It was really hard not being able to go outside, but our parents would come in on a daily basis and spend a few minutes with us. On really cold days they would bring us out warm oatmeal with a touch of cinnamon. It was great. I think were spoiled.
Spring came around and the door to our run was reopened. The snow was cold on our feet, but our parents put out some straw out for us so we could walk on that and keep our feet warm. As it warmed up we resumed our usual daily routine of scratching all around and laying eggs. Then to our surprise our parents deliver 13 younger chicks in the late spring. We the original 5 hot chicks were not happy about this. We made sure the newcomer’s were aware that there was a pecking order in our house. We would chase them around and bully them into submission. After several months had passed we had worked out the pecking order. We are happy to report that daily life has become peaceful. We have heard a rumor that our parents will be adding on a wing, no pun intended, onto our house for the long winter ahead. We could use the extra room and some more nesting boxes. Another rumor is that we will have a live web cam soon. I’m not totally thrilled with this idea. We want our privacy when we lay our eggs. What chick wouldn’t? So enjoy our blog and subscribe to keep updated.
